How to Choose a Printer on Prime Day

There is a lot that goes into how to choose a printer, but when it comes down to it, the choice tends to be focused on whether you’re going for an inkjet printer or a laser printer. Each one has its own pros and cons, and we have a more specific breakdown in our guide on the differences between inkjet and laser printers, but what it boils down to is cost. Inkjet printers tend to be a lot cheaper upfront to buy, and they have good quality, especially when printing a lot of monochrome text, but the downside is that ink cartridge costs can get astronomical, and cartridges do dry without use. On the other hand, Laser printers tend to cost a lot more upfront, but the toner is cheaper and lasts longer.

Besides that, there are probably two other things worth considering when going for a printer. The first is whether you need additional features like scanning and copying, which tend to add some additional cost, especially if you’re going for a replacement of a stand-alone copying machine. Second is to consider going for a tank printer, which doesn’t use cartridges at all and instead allows you to fill internal ink tanks as needed, which is a lot more convenient and cheaper in the long run, but buying one can be a bit pricey depending on your needs.

We’ve also written a guide on reducing long-term printer costs, so you should also check that out as well to help save yourself a little extra.

How We Chose These Printer Prime Day Deals

The truth is that there is a surprising number of printers out there when you include the various models and slight variations for both inkjet and laser printers, so finding the best cheap printers isn’t always easy. That said, what we aim for is to balance cost vs. the benefit that you’re getting and compare that to things like the context of other printers in a similar price bracket. On top of that, we may use our own tools to look at historical pricing to see if the value you are getting out of the deal is actually worth it.

Ultimately, it’s not always about buying the cheapest printers, and, in fact, it is often inadvisable, especially with some printers from certain brands where the quality is not great, and you’re not getting a lot of value for your printer. That’s why we also rely on our own experience as reviewers and deal hunters to make sure that we’re picking printers that fit your needs while also being the best bang for your buck.

HP Smart Tank 7301 -- $280 $420 50% off

Another solid option for a tank-based printer is this HP Smart Tank 7301, which has slightly faster print speeds than the Epson version, with up to 12ppm for black and white printing and up to 7ppm for colored print. It has a similar 1200 x 1200 scan resolution and a 600 DPI copy resolution, so it's about standard for what you'd expect in this price range. Also, HP's included inks should last you up to 8,000 colored pages and 6,000 black pages which is quite a lot considering most printing at home probably won't reach that in a few years.
