Best new movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Max (HBO), and more

Anthony Mackie poses dramatically as Captain America in a still from the movie "Captain America: Brave New World."
Marvel Studios / Marvel Studios

Unfortunately, the final weekend in May doesn’t have the most enticing lineup of new movies to stream.

The most prominent addition this week is Captain America: Brave New World on Disney+, but that’s pretty far from peak MCU. And the only real alternative this week is Prime Video’s The Fire Inside, a boxing drama based on a real life story. There’s bound to be better options heading into June, but for now, we’ll take what we can get.

You can find these films and more below among the best new movies to stream right now.

Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

There may be a great version of Captain America: Brave New World somewhere, but it isn’t in this film. All of the scenes with Giancarlo Esposito’s Sidewinder were Frankensteined into Brave New World during the reshoots, and they’re better than anything else in the film. Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is still settling in as Captain America when the new President of the United States, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford) asks him to set aside their differences and reform the Avengers. Before they can even try to attempt that, Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) brings the world to the brink of war and manipulates Sam’s friend, Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), and other pawns to get his revenge on Ross.

Mufasa is one of the most iconic characters in the Disney Vault, so why not do a live-action/CGI prequel to The Lion King that tells his story? Right? Naturally, Disney ties in the classic characters by using Rafiki to tell the story of young Mufasa to Simba and Nala’s daughter, as well as Timon and Pumbaa.

The tale follows Mufasa as an orphaned cub, alone and close to death when he’s found by Taka, who just happens to be heir to a royal bloodline. Suddenly, destiny is rewritten.

So it’s just as well that her older brother, Luke Purdue (John Krasinski), just cost her that job by stealing a painting out from under nose. Luke is an archeologist with a bad reputation, but he’s got the backing of a dying billionaire, Owen Carver (Domhnall Gleeson), to track down and locate the fabled Fountain of Youth. All this messaging wreaks havoc on launch director Cole Davis’ (Channing Tatum) worksite. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, suddenly both Jones and Davis have another job. They must stage a fake moon landing, just in case the real one doesn’t pan out.

Fear Street: Prom Queen is the loose continuation of R.L. Stein’s teen horror franchise after Netflix pumped out three Fear Street flicks in 2021. You don’t need to have seen any of those to understand what’s happening in this throwback story to 1988. Teenager Lori Granger (India Fowler) is the focus here, and she’s tired of being a social outcast because everyone thinks her mother murdered her dad. Lori is out to change everything by earning the prom queen title, even though her rival, Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza), isn’t going to simply let Lori take it from her. However, these young ladies have a much bigger problem than each other. A masked serial killer is methodically taking out victims at the prom, and at the rate things are going, either Lori or Tiffany could be next on the hit list.

A period piece about a fictional architect who the film credits with creating the Brutalist style of architecture, The Brutalist is a great case study for the different tastes of critics and audiences. While audiences largely enjoyed The Brutalist, it’s a three-and-a-half-hour epic with no shortage of pain and suffering. Naturally, that led it to earn ten Oscar nominations and three wins (including Best Actor for Adrien Brody).

Nonetheless, The Brutalist is true cinema, following László Toth’s (Brody) escape from post-war Europe to America to rebuild his life, work, and marriage to his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones) after the chaos of war. When prominent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce) notices his talent for building, his life goes on a very different path.

This A24 film examines intergenerational sexual dynamics in the workplace to the point of essentially being an erotic drama, albeit with more brain and less lust than 50 Shades of Grey.

Romy (Nicole Kidman) is a high-powered CEO with a beautiful family, but she puts all of that at risk when she enters into a submissive affair with her 21-year-old intern, Samuel (Harris Dickinson). With all the power at her disposal, Samuel simply assumes (correctly) that Romy wants to feel powerless.

The biggest box office flop of the year and one of the biggest ever, Better Man, grossed just over $20 million worldwide against a $110 million budget. The extraordinary loss is much more on marketing failures, however, than on the actual quality of the movie, which has received good reviews. Based on British pop star Robbie Williams’ rise, fall, and resurgence, Williams made the somewhat bizarre call to cast himself as a CGI monkey in the largely autobiographical film.

While the film is about the challenges of fame and success, the greatest irony is that Williams was nowhere near a big enough star to make a film like this in the first place.

Jason’s love for cinema started when he was 10 years old. Saddled with a nasty cold, he was forced to stay home from school for a full week. To pass the time, he watched a marathon of classic Alfred Hitchcock films on Cinemax and the rest is history. He furthered his film education by raiding used bookstores to read dusty old film criticism volumes and salacious movie star biographies. His real education included studying at Whitman College and then Syracuse University, where he won a student Emmy for producing a truly terrible television series.

His favorite movies are The Thing, All About Eve, The Ice Storm, Rear Window, Heat, The Cranes are Flying, Belle de Jour, Showgirls, and Clue. He thinks Mad Men is genius, still watches Seinfeld twice a week, and likes listening to shoegaze music, podcasts, and Lana Del Rey.
